The Mariner 2011   Dry Creek Vineyard Appellation: Dry Creek Valley Alcohol: 13.5% Suggested Retail: $45   “The Mariner is a red wine bearing what's called a proprietary name. It is a blend of grape varieties native to Bordeaux, as grown in the Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley. Though it's mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), it can't be labeled as such, because it contains less than the 75% minimum. 2012 Luminary Red Blend   Crimson Wine Group Appellation: American Alcohol: 14.7% Suggested Retail: $45   “This is a most unusual wine—and one we like. Luminary is a blend of several grape varieties, which in itself is not so unusual. Higher-end American blended red wines are often Cabernet Sauvignon-based and marketed under the general category of Meritage wines, which requires that they be made from the grape varieties typically grown in Bordeaux. Grapes were sourced from several vineyards in the Napa Valley and the Cabernet component is buoyed by inclusion of 14% Merlot. That would be unfortunate. Even though quite a light shade of pink, there's plenty of personality in the Provençal rose.
